Dental inlays and onlays are restorative treatments that can help repair damaged or decayed teeth. They are a popular alternative to traditional fillings or crowns, as they can be more durable and longer-lasting.
If you are considering dental inlays and onlays, it's important to understand what they are, how they work, and what their benefits and drawbacks are.
Dental inlays and onlays are restorative treatments used to repair damaged or decayed teeth. They are made from either porcelain or composite resin and are used to fill in cavities that are too large for a regular filling but not large enough to require a crown.
Dental inlays are used to fill cavities that are located in the centre of the tooth, while onlays are used to fill cavities that extend to the cusps (the pointed edges of the teeth). Both inlays and onlays are custom-made to fit the exact shape and size of the cavity, ensuring a precise fit and long-lasting results.
How are Dental Inlays and Onlays Different from Other Treatments?
Dental inlays and onlays differ from other restorative dental treatments in several ways.
Here are a few key differences:
Fillings are used to repair small cavities and are made from materials like silver amalgam or composite resin.
They are placed directly into the cavity and molded to fit the shape of the tooth. Dental inlays and onlays are used for larger cavities that require a more precise fit.
Crowns are used to repair teeth that are severely damaged or decayed.
They are custom-made to fit over the entire tooth, providing complete coverage and protection. Inlays and onlays are used for cavities that are too large for a filling but not severe enough to require a crown.
Implants are used to replace missing teeth. They involve surgically placing a titanium post into the jawbone, which acts as an anchor for a prosthetic tooth.
Inlays and onlays are used to repair existing teeth, rather than replace missing ones.
What are the Benefits of Dental Inlays and Onlays?
There are several benefits to choosing dental inlays and onlays over other restorative treatments.
Here are a few:
Durability Dental inlays and onlays are made from strong, durable materials that can withstand the wear and tear of everyday use. They can last up to 30 years with proper care.
Precision Inlays and onlays are custom-made to fit the exact shape and size of the cavity, ensuring a precise fit and long-lasting results.
Aesthetics Inlays and onlays are made from tooth-coloured materials, which blend in seamlessly with the rest of your teeth. This means that they are much less noticeable than silver amalgam fillings.
Minimal removal of tooth structure Unlike crowns, which require a significant amount of tooth structure to be removed, inlays and onlays only require the damaged or decayed portion of the tooth to be removed. This helps preserve the natural structure of the tooth.
What are the Drawbacks of Dental Inlays and Onlays?
While there are many benefits to dental inlays and onlays, there are also some potential drawbacks to consider.
Here are a few:
Cost Dental inlays and onlays can be more expensive than traditional fillings, as they are custom-made and require more time and materials to create.
Time Inlays and onlays require two visits to the dentist, as the restoration must be custom-made in a dental laboratory. This can be inconvenient for some patients who want a quicker, one-visit solution.
Sensitivity Some patients may experience sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures after receiving an inlay or onlay. This is a common side effect and usually subsides within a few days.
Strength Limitations Inlays and onlays may not be suitable for all types of cavities. They are best suited for cavities that are not too deep or wide, and that do not involve the tooth's biting surface.

Taking time to explain everything and what to expect, I never felt pressured or rushed it was exactly what I needed to gain some confidence. This practice is by far the very best I have been to - ever! ALL the staff are amazing, from the... warmest of welcomes on reception, to the most fantastic and 'state of the art' dental treatment by an experienced, professional and extremely caring dental team. The premises are inviting, relaxing, and absolutely spotless. I've instantly gone from a terrified patient to feeling reassured and happy with my treatment plan - in a very short period of time. I just wish we had found them sooner, and have absolutely no hesitation in recommending them (in fact I do so at every opportunity!) Never before has a dentist extracted my teeth without sedation, but Dr Johan did so with the very minimum of discomfort. I have now regained my smile, and could not be happier - thank you!read more
We lived in Canada for 20 years and when we returned to the UK eight years ago we struggled to find... a hygienist as thorough as our Canadian hygienist. Then we found Ramsbottom Dental Clinic and Kelly the hygienist. She is thorough but gentle and a lovely friendly person. The new premises are lovely with a large airy and bright waiting area. The receptionists are great and always make you feel welcome. I thoroughly recommend this dental practice.Lesley Welbourneread more
