Tooth extractions are a common dental procedure that can help improve oral health. The removal of a tooth may seem intimidating, but in some cases, it's the best course of action for maintaining a healthy smile. This article will discuss the different types of tooth extractions, reasons for their necessity, and what to expect during the procedure.
There are two main types of tooth extractions: simple and surgical.
Simple Extractions
Simple extractions are the most common type of tooth extraction. They are typically performed on teeth that are visible in the mouth and have a single root. Simple extractions can be done with just local anaesthesia, which numbs the area around the tooth.
Surgical Extractions
Surgical extractions are more complex and are performed on teeth that may not be easily visible, such as impacted teeth, or teeth with multiple roots. During a surgical extraction, the dentist or oral surgeon may need to make incisions into the gums to access the tooth. Often Conscious sedation is needed to perform this procedure.
Reasons for Tooth Extractions
There are several reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted, including:
Severe Decay
When a tooth has decayed to the point that it cannot be saved with a filling or crown, extraction may be necessary to prevent the spread of infection to other teeth.
Crowding
If the mouth is overcrowded with teeth, it may be necessary to remove one or more teeth to create space for proper alignment.
Gum Disease
Advanced gum disease can cause the teeth to loosen and shift, which may make extraction necessary.
Impacted Teeth
Teeth that are trapped beneath the gum line, or partially erupted, may cause pain or become infected, making extraction necessary.
What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction
01
Before the Procedure
Before a tooth extraction, the dentist or oral surgeon will conduct an exam and may take X-rays to determine the best course of action. If the extraction is surgical, the patient may be given general anaesthesia.
02
During the Procedure
During a simple extraction, the dentist will numb the area around the tooth and then use a tool called an elevator to loosen the tooth from the socket. Once the tooth is loose, the dentist will use forceps to remove it from the mouth. In a surgical extraction, the dentist may need to make incisions into the gums to access the tooth, and may need to remove it in pieces.
03
After the Procedure
After a tooth extraction, the dentist or oral surgeon will provide instructions for proper aftercare. This may include using ice packs to reduce swelling, taking pain medication as prescribed, and avoiding solid foods for a period of time.

The procedure itself is not painful, as the area around the tooth will be numbed with anaesthesia. However, there may be some discomfort or soreness after the procedure, which can be managed with pain medication.
If the extracted tooth is visible when you smile, you may want to consider a replacement tooth to maintain a healthy smile. Your dentist can discuss options such as dental implants or dentures.
Tooth extractions may seem intimidating, but they are sometimes necessary for maintaining good oral health and preventing further complications. If you are experiencing tooth pain or have been advised by your dentist that you may need an extraction, it's important to address the issue promptly to avoid potential health problems down the line.
Remember that not all tooth extractions are the same and that the procedure may vary depending on your individual needs. If you have any concerns or questions about tooth extractions, be sure to contact us. We can help you better understand the procedure, the reasons for its necessity, and what to expect during and after the extraction.
In summary, tooth extractions are an important dental procedure that can help improve oral health and prevent further complications. They may be necessary for a variety of reasons, including severe decay, crowding, gum disease, and impacted teeth. The procedure can be done as a simple or surgical extraction, and your dentist will provide guidance on what type of extraction is best for you. By addressing tooth issues promptly and seeking appropriate dental care, you can maintain a healthy smile for years to come.
Before and After 📸 Smile Transformation by Dr Johan!
This patient had suffered for years with misaligned, uneven worn teeth and hated smiling.
Dr Johan offered the patient orthodontic treatment and whitening. Because the teeth are so heavily worn the patient also required some restoration to align the edges. The patient decided to go for a veneer treatment. She had a narrow smile line and we only needed to veneer 6 teeth. These teeth were restored with 6 Emax crowns with a natural shade and design. Now she can smile at every opportunity.
