A bright, healthy smile can boost confidence and make a great first impression. However, many people struggle with teeth discolouration due to lifestyle choices, genetics, or aging. This is where teeth whitening comes in. Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure that involves removing stains and discolouration from the teeth to improve their appearance. In this article, we will discuss everything you need to know about teeth whitening and answer 10 of the most common questions.
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure that involves removing stains and discoloration from the teeth to improve their appearance. This is achieved through various methods, such as polishing, or using whitening agents like hydrogen peroxide. Teeth whitening can be done at a dental office or using at-home kits.
How does Teeth Whitening Work?
Teeth whitening works by breaking down stains and discoloration on the surface of the teeth. This is achieved through the use of whitening agents like hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which penetrate the enamel and break down the molecules causing the discoloration. This results in a brighter, whiter smile.
What are the Different Types of Teeth Whitening?
There are two main types of teeth whitening: in-office and at-home. In-office teeth whitening is done by a dental professional and usually involves stronger whitening agents and a light or heat source to activate them. At-home teeth whitening kits usually come with whitening gels or strips that can be applied to the teeth over a period of time.
How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?
The duration of teeth whitening results varies depending on the individual and the method used. Both In-office and at-home teeth whitening kits usually require touch-ups every few months. However, the benefit of professionally applied whitening kits are very cost-effective when performing maintenance whitening.
Is Teeth Whitening Safe?
Teeth whitening is generally safe when done correctly and under the guidance of a dental professional. However, some people may experience temporary side effects like sensitivity or gum irritation.
What are the Risks of Teeth Whitening?
While teeth whitening is generally safe, there are some risks associated with the procedure. These include tooth sensitivity, gum irritation, and damage to the enamel if the procedure is not done correctly. There are many non-professional products that claim to be able to whiten your teeth, but they can often cause permanent damage to your teeth. Always consult a dental professional before applying any whitening products to your teeth.

The cost of teeth whitening varies depending on the method used and the location. In-surgery teeth whitening can cost anywhere from £500 to £1,000, while at-home kits usually range from £200 to £400.
It is generally recommended to whiten teeth no more than once every six months to a year to avoid damaging the enamel.
Teeth whitening can damage the enamel if the procedure is not done correctly or if the bleaching agents are too strong. It is important to consult a dental professional before undergoing any teeth whitening procedure.
Teeth whitening may not be effective on dental restorations like fillings, crowns, or veneers. It is important to consult a dental professional before undergoing any teeth whitening procedure.
While there are natural remedies like brushing with baking soda or using activated charcoal that claim to whiten teeth, these methods have not been scientifically proven to be effective. In fact, some natural remedies may actually damage the enamel or cause gum irritation.
It is important to consult a dental professional before attempting any natural remedies or using at-home teeth whitening kits. A dental professional can assess the health of your teeth and recommend the best course of action for achieving a brighter, whiter smile.
It is generally recommended to avoid teeth whitening while pregnant or breastfeeding, as the safety of bleaching agents during these times is not well established.
If you experience sensitivity during teeth whitening, it is important to inform your dental professional. They may recommend using a lower concentration of bleaching agents or applying desensitising agents to alleviate discomfort.
Teeth whitening can cause uneven results if the bleaching agents are not applied evenly or if the teeth have uneven discolouration. This is why it is important to have teeth whitening done by a dental professional who can ensure even application.
To maintain the results of teeth whitening, it is important to practice good oral hygiene, avoid foods and drinks that can stain the teeth (such as coffee and red wine), and touch up as needed with at-home whitening kits or in-office treatments.
Teeth whitening may not be suitable for everyone, especially those with sensitive teeth, gum disease, or certain dental restorations. It is important to consult a dental professional to determine if teeth whitening is right for you and which method would be most effective.
Teeth whitening is a safe and effective way to improve the appearance of your smile. By understanding the different types of teeth whitening, how it works, and the risks and benefits involved, you can make an informed decision about whether teeth whitening is right for you. Always consult your dentist before undergoing any teeth whitening procedure to ensure your safety and achieve the best possible results.

This practice is by far the very best I have been to - ever! ALL the staff are amazing, from the... warmest of welcomes on reception, to the most fantastic and 'state of the art' dental treatment by an experienced, professional and extremely caring dental team. The premises are inviting, relaxing, and absolutely spotless. I've instantly gone from a terrified patient to feeling reassured and happy with my treatment plan - in a very short period of time. I just wish we had found them sooner, and have absolutely no hesitation in recommending them (in fact I do so at every opportunity!) Never before has a dentist extracted my teeth without sedation, but Dr Johan did so with the very minimum of discomfort. I have now regained my smile, and could not be happier - thank you!read more
We lived in Canada for 20 years and when we returned to the UK eight years ago we struggled to find... a hygienist as thorough as our Canadian hygienist. Then we found Ramsbottom Dental Clinic and Kelly the hygienist. She is thorough but gentle and a lovely friendly person. The new premises are lovely with a large airy and bright waiting area. The receptionists are great and always make you feel welcome. I thoroughly recommend this dental practice.Lesley Welbourneread more
